During Tuesday’s “His & Hers,” co-host and ESPN regular Michael Smith reacted to Oklahoma University’s football team losing a recruit because of the video of an Oklahoma fraternity participating in a racist chant.
Smith said that unless he lived there or has always had a dream to go there, he would have serious reservations sending his child to go to school there.
“There are levels of racism at all walks of life and at every university. A lot of times it’s beneath the surface. This is something that is going to be a stain on Oklahoma’s reputation as a whole.”
Later, he added, “If I’m a parent and I’m seeing that, if I’m not from Norman, didn’t grow up there or didn’t dream of sending my kid there, ff I’m not a football player that didn’t dream of being the next Billy Sims or even Demarco Murray. If I’m not one of those guys, then I’m going to have serious reservations and reluctance of sending my child or going to the University of Oklahoma despite of the way they’ve rallied, and that’s commendable, but knowing as you tweeted, that was a traditional chant. They didn’t just make that up. In 2015 we typically don’t hang people from trees so this is passed down from generation to generation it sounds like.”
