Dem Sen Blumenthal: It ‘Would Be a Profound Sign, Adding to This Case of Obstruction’ if Trump Takes the 5th

On Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “All In,” Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) stated that if President Trump invokes the 5th Amendment to avoid answering questions in response to a grand jury subpoena, it “would be a profound sign, adding to this case of obstruction of justice.”

Blumenthal said Trump does have the right to refuse to be interviewed by Mueller and claim the 5th Amendment.

He later predicted that refusing to give an interview to Mueller would result in a grand jury subpoena, “then he would have to invoke the Fifth Amendment in order to avoid responding to questions, which I think would be a profound sign, adding to this case of obstruction of justice. Remember, that he’s the president of the United States. Ultimately, he is responsible for enforcing the law. He’s dragged the FBI into the muck and mire of partisan politics, trying to discredit what the FBI has found in the course of this investigation. Now, his refusing to cooperate, I think, will speak volumes, really incredible volumes about his potential culpability for obstruction of justice, and he’ll have to take the Fifth Amendment if he’s subpoenaed to the grand jury if he wishes to avoid answering questions.”
