James Gandolfini, who made Tony Soprano one of the most iconic characters across the television landscape, has died at the age of 51.
The husky actor was in Italy at the time of his death. Deadline.com reports a heart attack may be to blame.
Gandolfini’s work on The Sopranos, the HBO drama following a New Jersey mobster and his extended clan, catapulted the actor to stardom. His Tony Soprano could be charming and cruel, a man fully aware of his demons but unable to conquer them.
He was slated to appear in the upcoming HBO series Criminal Justice, and was most recently seen portraying Leon Panetta in the Oscar-nominated film Zero Dark Thirty and in Not Fade Away. His other big screen credits include The Mexican, Killing Them Softly, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Last Castle.
His Sopranos legacy will be his enduring stamp on entertainment culture, one which wrapped with one of the most debated series endings in history back in 2007.
