Rapper Afroman, famous for his 2001 single “Because I got High,” appeared to be feeling pretty low Thursday morning when he told TMZ Live he was apologetic for striking a female fan Tuesday evening at a Mississippi concert.
Legally named Joseph Edgar Foreman, the rapper was playing an electric guitar for a crowd of fans in Biloxi, when a woman entered the stage behind him and began dancing. Without warning, Foreman turned around and viciously punched the woman in the face.
He was soon arrested for assault, but was released after posting a $330 bond.
Foreman is now citing anxiety and a case of mistaken identity as reasons for the hit.
“I wanna apologize for my actions. I’m enrolling in some anxiety foundation right now, I’m trying to get it done,” Afroman told Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere. “I love my fans, I go early these days to meet and greet ‘em, hang out with ‘em.”
Foreman says he was forced to endure some unique conditions prior to the show, like walking a long distance and missing out on his dinner.
“It was an early show. I usually play at night when I’ve had my dinner and I medicate, I get right, but it was an early show. It was Mardi Gras. I had to walk, like, half a mile to get to the place.”
Additionally, Afroman says he had gotten the girl confused with a male heckler:
I had my frustrations, to make a long story short, and I had a guy that was on the side of the stage he was yelling at me, yelling some obscenities I don’t wanna really repeat, but these girls got on stage and I asked them to leave.
I was trying to keep rapping, and one girl left, I thought both of them left and the guy was still over there hollering from the side of the stage, so as I’m playing I’m thinking it’s the guy starting to heckle.
When people get on stage you don’t know what they’re doing you don’t know what’s gonna happen next, and I’m just tying to do my job and I thought it was that guy I turned around and you know… man.
It was wrong.
