Although President Obama omitted the words “Islamic terrorism” from his speech tonight, many applauded him for uttering “lesbian,” “transgender,” and “bisexual” for the first time ever in the history of the State of the Union Address.

Obama’s injecting the LGBT vocabulary into SOTU is a milestone.  Here is the passage:

That’s why we defend free speech, and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. We do these things not only because they’re right, but because they make us safer.

President Obama, who ended the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, took a stance on the military’s transgender ban in last night’s speech, suggesting that allowing trans people into the military will “make us safer.”
