A home invasion suspect who targeted the home of an off-duty California Highway Patrol (CHP) died after being transported to the hospital.

The incident occurred Sunday morning in Redding around 3 a.m.

According to ChicoER News, Redding police originally received a call that someone was trying to break into a house “in the 800 block of Country Oak Drive.” The break-in attempt failed and the suspect was gone when police arrived.

As police searched for the suspect they received another 911 call, this time saying that someone was trying to break into a “home in the 400 block of Country Oak Drive.” This home belongs to a CHP officer who was off-duty and home at the time of the alleged intrusion. When Redding police arrived the CHP officer had shot the suspect and was holding him at gunpoint.

The Sacramento Bee reports the “suspect was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.”
