Kerry: Iranian Government 'Elected'

On Wednesday, newly-minted Secretary of State John Kerry continued his tour of blunders with a whopper about the government of Iran. “Iran is a country with a government that was elected and that sits in the United Nations,” said Kerry. “And it is important for us to deal with nation-states in a way that acts in the best interests of all of us in the world.”

Iran is not a democracy. The so-called election of Mahmoud Ahmaedinejad to the presidency in 2009 was almost certainly corrupt, including serious fraud and prompting the uprising that President Obama promptly ignored. Vice President Joe Biden even said at the time, “There’s an awful lot of questions about how this election was run.”

But according to the Obama foreign policy team, the Iranian regime is now perfectly legitimate. That’s the position that Chuck Hagel had to run from during his confirmation hearings for Secretary of Defense, but now our Secretary of State is mirroring the same pathetic position in an attempt to draw Iran into some sort of dialogue.

It won’t work. And it will continue to lend legitimacy to a regime hell-bent on oppressing its own people and fostering terrorism around the world.
