Aug. 16 (UPI) — The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, said Sunday federal immigration agents have arrested three people wanted by Mexican authorities, including a suspected member of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
“In just one day, U.S. authorities returned three fugitives wanted in Mexico: a member of the CJNG [Jalisco New Generation Cartel] narco-terrorist organization wanted on a firearms charge in Guanajuato, a fugitive wanted for murder in Zacatecas, and a third wanted for fraud,” Johnson wrote in the post on X.
He said the arrests were a demonstration of bilateral security cooperation between the governments of U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum.
“Our cooperation, driven by @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and President @ClaudiaShein, sends criminals a clear message: you will be caught and held accountable,” he wrote.
His post didn’t include the names of the three individuals, nor where in the United States they were arrested.
He similarly did not provide any details about a border crossing or how they were handed over to Mexican authorities.
The Trump administration officially designated the CJNG as a narco-terrorist organization in February 2025.
On his first day in office, the U.S. president issued an executive order designating cartels and other transnational criminal organizations as foreign terrorists and has put pressure on Mexico, as well as Canada, to do more to stem the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
The U.S. State Department this month announced rewards totaling up to $102 million for information leading to the capture of eight leaders and associates of the Jalisco Cartel.
The richest reward, $25 million, is for Juan Carlos Valencia González, identified by U.S. authorities as its new leader following the death of his stepfather and the group’s founder, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho.”
