Dec. 9 (UPI) — Jalen Hurts committed a career-high five turnovers, including two on the same play, in a Philadelphia Eagles loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Credit to that defense being able to be as disruptive as they were,” Hurts, who totaled four interceptions and a fumble in the 22-19 loss Monday in Inglewood, Calif., told reporters.
“Ultimately, it’s a test and a challenge that I accept. I look at it and I have the focus to learn from it.”
The nightmare night included Hurts throwing an interception and fumbling during a single second-quarter sequence. He completed just 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards and failed to throw or run for a touchdown for the first time this season.
“I didn’t play well enough,” Hurts said. “I had too many turnovers. Lots of opportunities, especially when we got on the other side of the 50. I wasn’t able to get us in the box.”

The Eagles out-gained the Chargers 365-275 in total yards, but converted just 4 of 13 third-down conversion attempts. They also trailed by more than eight minutes in time of possession. The Chargers allowed seven Eagles sacks and logged two turnovers.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to running back Omarion Hampton for the first points of the night 6:11 into the first quarter. Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made a 41-yard field goal on the next possession.
The Eagles again marched into Chargers territory midway through the second quarter, but Hurts proceeded to give the ball back to the Chargers twice on the same play to end that drive.
Hurts first threw a pass to wide receiver A.J. Brown, which was intercepted by Da’Shawn Hand. The Chargers defensive lineman then fumbled, with Hurts recovering the loose ball. Defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell then forced Hurts to fumble, leading to a Chargers recovery.
Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker turned those turnovers into points when he made a 45-yard field goal about three minutes later. Cornerback Donte Jackson intercepted Hurts for a second time two plays into the next drive. But Herbert gave the ball back to the Eagles when he fumbled on the next play.
Elliott made a 30-yard field goal on the resulting drive. Eagles cornerback Adoree’ Jackson intercepted Herbert with about 10 seconds remaining. Elliott then missed a 48-yard field goal at the end of the first half, leading to a 10-6 Chargers lead at the break.
Dicker made a 34-yard field goal on the first drive of the second half, with the Chargers taking 9:28 off the clock. Elliott made a 54-yard field goal on the next possession.
Running back Saquon Barkley ripped off a 52-yard touchdown run at the start of the fourth quarter to give the Eagles their first lead.
Hurts threw his third interception of the night with about 11 minutes remaining. Dicker made a 31-yard field goal on the resulting possession to tie the score at 16-16.
Elliott made the score 19-16 with about two minutes remaining. Dicker made a 46-yard field goal near the end of regulation to force overtime. He added a 54-yard field goal at the end of the first possession of overtime for the final points of the game.
Chargers safety Tony Jefferson intercepted Hurts for a fourth time on the final play of the night, ending the contest.
Hurts, who entered Monday with three interceptions through 12 starts this season, equaled his interception total in the loss. He completed 64.7% of his throws for 2,754 yards, 19 scores and six interceptions so far this season. He totaled five interceptions and two fumbles in his last two starts.
“It definitely stings,” Hurts said. “But, how do you respond? That’s the only way I know how to look at it. You are going to see what type of resolve we have. What’s in us to respond teh way we want to. We’ve just got to dig.”

Herbert completed 12 of 26 passes for 139 yards, a score and an interception in the win. Cornerback Cam Hart joined Hand, Jackson and Jefferson among the Chargers players to intercept Hurts.
Eagles linebacker Jalyx Hunt logged 2.5 sacks in the loss. Defensive tackles Jordan Davis and Byron Young each totaled 1.5 sacks for the Eagles.
“Hard to beat a team on the road when you’re not finishing drives and getting three points,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “I’ve gotta take that on myself.”
The Eagles (8-5) are now on a three-game losing streak, their first such skid since 2023. They will host the Las Vegas Raiders (2-11) at 1 p.m. EST Sunday in Philadelphia. The Chargers (9-4) will take on the Kansas City Chiefs (6-7) at the same time in Kansas City, Mo.
