Oct. 21 (UPI) — A man was killed in his car during an apparent road rage shooting while driving across the George Washington Bridge in New York City, multiple reports indicated Wednesday.
An initial investigation of the Tuesday evening incident has led authorities to believe the 46-year-old victim died when he was shot through his window by the occupant of another vehicle following a near collision on the bridge, police sources told The New York Times, 1010 WINS and WNBC-TV.
The apparent shooting happened near the 179th Street ramp on the upper level of the double-decker bridge, which spans the Hudson River connecting New York with New Jersey.
The sources identified the victim as Koran Irvine, a off-duty employee of the power utility Con Edison, which released a statement mourning its employee’s death.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him,” the utility said.
New York City and New York-New Jersey Port Authority police said Wednesday they are searching for a suspect in the shooting, which forced a closure of the world’s busiest bridge until 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
The suspected shooter fled the scene after the incident, police said. They did not immediately release a description of a possible suspect or of a vehicle.
