Liz Cheney Announces Primary Challenge to Wyoming Sen. Enzi

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney announced on Tuesday that she will challenge Wyoming incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi in the Republican primary in 2014. Enzi also announced on Tuesday that he would be seeking reelection, formalizing the matchup.

Liz Cheney’s campaign made the formal announcement to the Associated Press and then released a campaign video on YouTube in which she said a “new generation” of leaders must “step up to the plate.” She said she would “never compromise” when the country’s freedoms are at stake.

In what may be a preview of an attack line against Enzi, Cheney said politicians should stop cutting deals with President Barack Obama’s “liberal allies” and instead be “opposing him every step of the way.” She said Obama has launched wars on the Second Amendment, religious freedom, and freedom of speech, as well as using the EPA to “launch a war” on Wyoming’s ranchers and farmers.

Cheney recently moved her family from McLean, Virginia to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and has been showing up at various political events throughout the state with her family.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) declared last week that it would support Enzi if Cheney entered the race.
