Maine Ethics Commission filings show Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety has given more than $3.5 million to the state’s gun control lobby since 2015.

The goal of the money is to secure California-style gun control in the state via the implementation of universal background checks. Bloomberg and company similarly funded the gun control lobby in Washington state, securing universal background checks in November 2014, and they are currently funding the same effort in Nevada.

Interestingly, universal background checks are a dismal failure each time they are enacted. Moreover, they are insidious, leading to other gun controls that also fail to stop crime.

For example, although Washington state passed universal checks in 2014, implementing them in 2015, a campaign is already afoot in that state to put firearm confiscation laws in place. And although Oregon implemented universal background checks in 2015, gun storage requirements and broader gun purchase bans are now being sought. In California, universal background checks have been partnered with firearm registration requirements and gun confiscation laws, as well.

In Maine, Bloomberg’s group is dumping millions in support of a ballot initiative to expand background checks. Bangor Daily News reports that Bloomberg’s group has not only given money to the gun control push, but makes up “almost all of the funding for the effort.”

Bloomberg’s involvement in the push to place more gun controls on the backs of law-abiding citizens is a stark reminder of the lengths to which the gun control lobby, and their wealth, will go to accomplish their goal.
