Former First Lady Michelle Obama took a not-so-veiled swipe at President Trump Tuesday when, in her first solo speech in Canada, she warned the crowd that it is not a good idea to tweet first thing in the morning.
The New York Post reports that Mrs. Obama was introduced by Canadian First Lady Sophie Trudeau at an event for economic equality. During her remarks, she reportedly warned that it was “never a good idea” to put your first moments on social media and warning against the tendency to “tweet from bed” — an apparent reference to President Trump’s now infamous early morning tweets that often contain some of his most controversial statements.
Obama’s remarks came a day before Trump would cause international controversy by retweeting videos allegedly showing crimes by Muslim migrants. The videos were tweeted out by a right-wing British group, Britain First, and Trump’s retweeting drew condemnation from 10 Downing Street.
According to People, she took another jab at Trump by saying that “no one person can break” the country.
“One thing I’ve learned in politics. One person can’t make the change. Change is from the bottom up. Not the top down. And that’s a good thing,” she said. “That means that no one person can break all this either.”
Obama herself is known for a number of high profile gaffes. In 2008 she caused an uproar when she said: “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”
In 2009 she put her arm around Queen Elizabeth II on a visit to London, an apparent breach of protocol.
Discussing the discussion on Tuesday, she dismissed the idea that she did anything wrong.
“What do you do with the Queen? I touched her. She touched me first,” she said.
The Post reports that she was asked who would be her dream dinner guest. Mrs. Obama, known for her promotion of healthy eating habits, said that she would invite Jesus over for pizza.
