A homeowner in Sacramento County, California, shot a burglary suspect that fled through the homeowner’s backyard in an attempt to escape police.

CBS Sacramento reports the suspect led police on a chase that “spanned two counties.” He then exited his SUV and ran through neighborhoods hoping to elude police.

He ran through the backyard of homeowner who was outside, enjoying time with his wife, and who subsequently feared for his life when the burglary suspect appeared.

The homeowner shot the intruder.

KCRA reports the suspect was wanted in connection with a robbery of a Rocklin County business, and the pursuit began after an unmarked police car spotted him driving his vehicle just after 6 p.m. A patrol car was called in and attempted to pull the suspect over but he drove away instead.

The suspect was transported to the hospital after being shot and his injuries are not life-threatening.
