One would think that a suspension of play and an order to remain home as much as possible, would be a surefire way to ensure that professional athletes stay healthy.

Well, one would not be entirely correct.

Texas Rangers pitcher James Jones tore the patella tendon in his right knee on Monday, after he tripped over his son’s toy, MLB.com reported.

Jones had season-ending surgery on Wednesday, and is not expected back until 2021.

“Jones, the Mariners’ former fourth-round pick in 2009, was expected to compete for a bullpen spot on the Rangers’ roster this year once play resumed after the league suspended the season due to the global coronavirus pandemic,” the New York Post reports.

Of course, describing the surgery as season-ending when the season never really began and very well may never happen, is a bit unusual. However, if one has to suffer a freak injury, this may have been the year to do it.
