U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia took a swipe at California in his dissent of Friday’s landmark 5-4 ruling that made gay marriage a constitutionally protected right under the Fourteenth Amendment and legal in all 50 states.

Court Rules ‘Shoot the Gays’ Referendum Can Be Blocked

On Monday, a judge from Sacramento County ruled that a proposed ballot measure called the “Sodomite Suppression Act,” which called for the execution of gays and lesbians throughout the state, was unconstitutional. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Raymond M. Cadei’s decision means that the measure cannot advance to the signature-gathering phase, thus barring it from being placed on the ballot.

Cal AG Kamala Harris’ 2nd Employee Busted Impersonating Law Enforcement

For the second time, an employee in the California Department of Justice was caught impersonating as a sworn law enforcement officer. California Attorney General and Democratic Senate candidate Kamala Harris’ office was rocked last month when one of her direct aides was arrested on charges of impersonating a police officer after he took a leading role in setting up a fake police department. Harris has made no comment on either case.

Kamala Wants to Cancel Billions in Corinthian College Student Loans

Harris stated that she may be able to wipe out student loans through a “closed-school loan discharge”, a rule that provides students with debt relief if they cannot complete their education because their school closed. But “closed-school loan discharge” means former students are not eligible for debt relief, and students that try to transfer with completed class credits lose their eligibility for any debt relief.

Del Beccaro Joins Race for Boxer’s Seat

Former California Republican Party chair Thomas Del Beccaro announced Sunday that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by incumbent liberal Democrat Barbara Boxer upon her retirement in 2017. Del Beccaro is the second major Republican running for the seat, which is also being contested by Assemblymember Rocky Chavez (R-Oceanside).

Loretta Sanchez May Announce Challenge to Kamala Harris

As Attorney General Kamala Harris has gone unchallenged in her candidacy for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat, speculation has focused on whether a Latino candidate who could more effectively represent the needs of the state’s large Latino population would emerge to run for the office. On Monday, Rep. Loretta Sanchez will speak at a luncheon of the Democratic Foundation of Orange County, possibly announcing her candidacy, according to The Orange County Register.

U.S. Senate candidate Kamala Harris is said to have her eyes on the U.S. presidency over the long term–but is declining to endorse Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee who has a chance to be elected the first female president in 2016. 9th Circuit Reverses Itself: California AG Can Argue to Limit Concealed Carry

After ruling against California’s “good cause” requirement for concealed carry in February 2014, then refusing California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ request to challenge the ruling in November–thereby implying that the eased concealed carry restrictions would stand–the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed itself and announced Thursday it will hear an appeal on its original decision and will allow Harris’ office to be part of that appeal.

California Polls Set Tough Challenge for Republicans

Despite the presence of Republican presidential contenders in the Golden State this weekend, a pair of Field Polls released late last week look grim for the GOP. One shows President Barack Obama’s approval rating among likely voters in the Golden State rising to 57%, “the best appraisal of Obama in over two years by Californians.” The other shows that fewer than one in five Californians approve of Congress, and a near-majority say Republican control of both houses of Congress is a bad thing.
