CNN Shakes Up Daytime Schedule

CNN Shakes Up Daytime Schedule

As promised, CNN chief Jeff Zucker is looking for more “attitude” in his daytime programming and has followed through on that promise by reorganizing the chairs on the Titanic. The only surprise in the shake-up is that there is nothing whale-oriented.  “New Day” will continue to fail in the 6 – 9 a.m. slot. Here is the new daytime schedule until “The Lead with Jake Tapper” kicks off at 4 p.m.:

  • 9 – 11 a.m.                  Carol Costello
  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.       John Berman and Michaela Pereira
  • 12 – 1 p.m.                  Ashleigh Banfield
  • 1 – 2 p.m.                    Wolf Blitzer
  • 2 – 4 p.m.                    Brooke Baldwin

Ashleigh Banfield is being bumped an hour from the 11 – 12 p.m. slot to make way for John Berman and Michaela Pereira.

“Around the World” with Suzanne Malveauz and Micheal Holmes is being cancelled to make room for Banfield’s new slot.

Wolf Blitzer, Brooke Baldwin, and Carol Costello are staying put.

My guess is that this is all about Zucker testing out how well Berman and Pereira do together. CNN is a cable network buried in unappealing anchors and in that respect, Berman and Pereira are a real bright spot: likable and intelligent. With “New Day” floundering in a big way, Zucker could be warming up his relievers.

The loss of “Around the World” isn’t. Michael Holmes was just a thinner, blonder version of Piers Morgan: a pompous, mouthy leftist. Malveaux hardly registers. Most people won’t even know it’s gone.
