On June 29, 2011, Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller visited the White House for the Obama administration’s “Pride Reception.” There, Savage wore a pin reading “EVOLVE ALREADY” – an attempt to push President Obama into fully embracing gay marriage. “I believe the president should evolve,” Savage told the press pool. “He says he’s evolving. I believe him. I want to hurry him along.” Savage said Obama would embrace gay marriage in February 2013, after his re-election.
While at the White House, Savage and Miller hung out with top-ranking Obama administration officials. Here’s Terry Miller having a grand old time with Jill Biden, wife of Joe:
Here’s Savage with (from left to right) Fort Worth city councilman Joel Burns; White House Deputy Director of the Office of Public Engagement Brian Bond; Eliza Byard, executive director of the radical Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN); and Kevin Jennings, who was at the time the Obama administration “Safe Schools Czar”:
Jennings, of course, was Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the US Department of Education. Prior to his selection by the Obama administration, he was the founder of GLSEN, where he famously advised a teenage boy to use a condom after the boy came to him for advice about sex with men in a bus station bathroom. The incident prompted 53 House Republicans to call for his resignation. After the outcry, Jennings admitted he should have “handled the situation differently.”
Bond has been the single most obvious advocate for Savage at the White House. He has essentially fundraised for Savage’s It Gets Better Project on the White House website:
[T]housands of Americans have come together to share their stories of hope and encouragement for LGBT youth who are struggling as part of the It Gets Better Project …

Savage’s ties to the White House are substantial. And his visit to the White House was only a symptom of those deeper ties.
