Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she thought that the first presidential debate was “even.” “I thought it was OK,” she said, “I thought he got the ball over the net.” Only later, when she talked to those who had watched the debate on television, did she realize what a disaster it had been, she explained. “I realized that something on TV was different. Even on the radio it wasn’t perceived to be as big a divide as it was for those watching TV.”

Pelosi offered no explanation for this discrepancy. While Richard Nixon didn’t wear makeup and was suffering from flu during his famed 1960 debate with John F. Kennedy, no such mishaps plagued President Obama. There is no polling information to suggest a discrepancy between voters based on whether they heard the debate on radio or watched it on television.
