On Monday, Rasmussen Reports released a poll that shows the race to become Virginia’s next governor is a dead heat. Likely Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe has the support of 44% of voters, while Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli has the support of 41% of voters.
The poll of 1,000 likely Virginia voters has a margin of error of 3%, making the results a statistical tie.
Monday’s results indicate that the race has moved slightly towards Cuccinelli over the last month. A Quinnipiac University Poll conducted between May 8 and May 13 showed McAuliffe with a 5 point, 43% to 38% lead. The May poll of 1,286 registered Virginia voters had a 2.7% margin of error. In February, Quinnipiac University released a poll that showed a 38%-38% dead heat between Cuccinelli and McAuliffe.
The new poll results could mean that the selection of E.W. Jackson as the Republican Party’s nominee for Lieutenant Governor at the May 18 convention in Richmond may have helped Cuccinelli.
The Democratic Party will select their nominees for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General in a primary election tomorrow, June 11.
The general election will be held five months from now in November.
