Late Friday, Box Office Mojo was pretty down on the chances “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” had for a $70 million debut. What a difference 12 hours makes. Thanks to lingering goodwill from 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” terrific reviews (I’m a fan), and no real competition. “Dawn” could land somewhere in the vicinity of $65 million by Monday morning.
Deadline believes $70 million is a real possibility.
Per Deadline, thanks to another $14 million haul, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” came in second and will cross the $200 million mark this weekend.
Melissa McCarthy’s “Tammy” is already flaming out. The $11.5 million the R-rated comedy takes in this weekend will bring its two week total to a measly $56 million.
“22 Jump Street” had a little gas left in the tank for week 5. The $6 million haul bring its total to a very impressive $171 million. The comedy sequel, unfortunately, is the sole over-performer of the summer.
Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood,” a critical favorite, debuted to an impressive per screen of $60,700 on 5 screens.
Deadline has the full top 10.
