Polls: Israelis Support Gaza Air Offensive, Hesitant About Ground Invasion

Three polls found Israelis strongly support Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense against Hamas in the Gaza Strip but were hesitant about a potential ground invasion.

Thousands of reservists from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were called up over the weekend for a potential ground operation.

A poll taken by Panels for the Israeli Center for Political Training found 85% of Israelis favored the current air strikes against Hamas rocket emplacements, but only 25% recommended a ground offensive.

A Dialog/Haaretz poll found 84% of Israelies supported the air offensive, while only 30% supported a ground operation.

A Midgam poll found 91% of Israelis supported the air operation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak also fared well in the polls.

In the Panels poll, 78% approved of Netanyahu’s performance while 70% approved of Barak’s. In the Dialog poll, Netanyahu’s approval rating was 55% while Barak’s was 52%.
