Almost 40 Dead After Al-Shabab Raids Village Near Ethiopia

On May 27 almost 40 people were killed after Al-Shabab militants raided “a village between Ethiopia and Somalia.”

Al-Shabab is an “Al-Qaeda-linked” group of militants.

According to Voice of America (VOA), the local Somali governor said “27 pro-government militiamen and 12 Al-Shabab fighters were killed in the ensuing clash.” The village afterward “remained in control of the militias, who have been working with governments on both sides of the border.”

VOA reports that while Al-Shabab “has lost most of the territory it once controlled in Somalia,” the group is still “a threat to the country’s African Union-backed government.” In February Al-Shabab militants “attacked the presidential palace,” killing 17, though the president was not injured.
