Various media outlets are reporting that a British blogger and member of the Green Party was visited by police this weekend after tweeting fake campaign literature which was branded with the UK Independence Party (UKIP) logo.
Both the Guardian and the Telegraph, as well as other local news outlets have reported from Michael Abberton’s blog, that police officers visited the Green Party activist on Saturday afternoon and asked him to remove tweets which used UKIP logos and party policies to campaign against the party.
But Breitbart London has learned from Cambridgeshire Police that not only did officers not ask Abberton to remove the tweets as he claims, but that the complaint was made with regard to misrepresentation, and the allegation that Abberton may have been attempting to fool people into believing that he was, or the graphic was from, a UKIP activist.
Cambridgeshire Police told Breitbart London, “It’s always best to check [rather than believing the media reporting]. We were looking into whether there was any impersonation there. Someone pretending to be a UKIP activist when they weren’t”.
The complaint was allegedly made under the Representation of the People Act, and at no point were the police trying to curtail Abberton’s freedom of speech. Abberton wrote: “They asked me to ‘take it down’ but I said I couldn’t do that…”
But a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We were called with a complaint about a message on social media at about 12.40pm on Friday.
“Inquiries were made as to whether any offences had been committed under the Representation of the People Act but none were revealed and no further action was taken.”
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the visit but said they had not told Mr Abberton to delete tweets.
