Major League Baseball suspended Baltimore Orioles infielder Chris Davis for amphetamine use.
The 25-game ban takes effect immediately and extends into the postseason. Baltimore enjoys a 10-game lead in the AL East and appears as a lock to win the division. With seventeen games remaining, the math suggests that Davis might be ready to return sometime during the ALCS, or early in the World Series, should Baltimore make it that far.
“I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization and especially the fans,” Davis declared in an MLB Players Association release. “I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic-use exemption (TUE) this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately.”
Davis has hit just .196 this season. But the first baseman, who has been playing third after the Manny Machado injury, boasts 26 home runs and 72 RBI. He hit 53 home runs last season.
