On July 8, White House press secretary Josh Earnest tried to defend President Obama’s post-Dallas gun control push by explaining that Obama is concerned about the “easy access” to guns in the U.S.

Earnest made these comments after Obama spoke from Warsaw, Poland, early Friday morning. During those comments, Obama said he was horrified by the police ambush, then signaled a new gun control push would be forthcoming.

According to Politico, Earnest stressed that Obama’s “thoughts first and foremost are with the families of those who lost loved ones” in Dallas. However, the “easy access” to guns continues to be “a significant source of concern” for Obama. Earnest said, “Too many innocent lives have been claimed because of the easy access people have to guns, in some cases, guns that were never intended to be on city streets.”

Earnest was also asked about Obama’s ongoing support for Black Lives Matter (BLM), especially pro-BLM statements made by Obama in the wake of the officer-involved shootings of Alton Sterling (Baton Rouge) and Philando Castile (Falcon Heights, Minnesota). Earnest responded by quoting Obama’s own words from Warsaw:

So when people say “Black Lives Matter,” that doesn’t mean blue lives don’t matter; it just means all lives matter, but right now the big concern is the fact that the data shows black folks are more vulnerable to these kinds of incidents.
