California Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore) has introduced legislation to protect Californians from being falsely accused of gun violence in the new era of “Gun Violence Restraining Orders” (GVROs).

On a Facebook post dated February 4, Melendez wrote: “I did not enact the law [creating GVROs], but I’m awfully happy to be the one to undo it.”

GVROs were put in place in 2014 via AB 1014. Breitbart News previously reported that the bill was sponsored by Assembly members Nancy Skinner (D-15) and Das Williams (D-37). It was put forth in the wake of the Santa Barbara attack in which Elliot Rodger stabbed three people to death and shot three people to death. It allows family members to petition a court to temporarily order the confiscation of firearms from a person at danger of carrying out gun violence.

Melendez and others believe the law actually opens law-abiding gun owners up to false accusations that would lead to the temporary loss of their means of self-defense. She wrote: “Law-abiding gun owners should NEVER have to fear their rights can be stripped away because an angry EX or neighbor wants to get even.”

Melendez’s bill is AB 205.
