An Afghan migrant was found dead by the side of the road in Calais in an apparent hit and run as investigators search for a potential suspect in the case.

The man, who has not been able to be identified or his age discovered, is thought to have been hit by a vehicle along the ring road which leads to the city’s port. Investigators say the man was found dead by the side of the road but so far they have not been able to identify the vehicle that fatally struck him L’Express reports.

The prefecture of Pas-de-Calais said that they have opened an investigation into the case and said that while they were not certain they believed the victim to be an Afghan national.

Calais police estimate there to be around 350 to 400 migrants living in the Calais area. The number has fluctuated wildly since the closure of the formerly infamous Calais Jungle migrant camp which at one point was home to 10,000 migrants attempting to smuggle themselves to the UK.

The incident is also not the first time a migrant has been killed or injured along one of the main roads near the port. Last year a British driver turned himself in after hitting and accidentally killing an Eritrean migrant who was on the road. 35-year-old Abraham Reichman said the migrant and his wife ran out in front of him at night and he was unable to avoid them.

Motorists driving through the area have also been attacked by migrants including a trucker who was attacked my migrants who hit him in the head with a brick and stole his vehicle in July.

A month prior to the incident another motorist was killed in the Calais area after migrants had put down tree trunks on the road in order to get trucks to stop for them. Nine Eritrean nationals were later arrested in connection with the incident.
