On August 31 a Libyan militia seized the US Embassy in Tripoli, with individual fighters videotaping each other “cheering” and “diving from… [an embassy] balcony into a swimming pool.”
Libya’s government now says “militias have captured most government ministries in [Tripoli].”
According to BBC News, these “militias have been fighting for power among themselves since… Col. Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown” by militias with the backing of U.S. air power in 2011. Al Jazeera reports that U.S. Embassy “staff had been evacuated to neighboring Tunisia in July” because of the “inter-militia violence,” but Secretary of State John Kerry stressed that “the embassy was not closed.”
On October 31, 2012–just a month and a half after the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi–Breitbart News reported that Libya’s former Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril accused Obama and Western allies of creating a “power vacuum” in 2011 by deposing Gaddafi then “high-tailing it out of [Libya]” without plans to help form a post-Gaddafi government.
Jibril added:
After the collapse of the regime, the immediate task of out friends was to help rebuild the government before they withdrew from Libya. [But] the moment the regime fell down, they felt that their mission [had] been accomplished. I think it was a premature decision.
