School Choice Proponents Target ‘Know-Nothing’ Anti-Catholic Amendments

School choice supporters are urging the relocation of a portrait of Massachusetts nativist “Know-Nothing” Party Gov. Henry Gardner from its place of prominence in the State House. As their reason, they cite bigotry inherent in two amendments to the state’s Constitution based on his Party’s anti-Catholic sentiment in the mid-nineteenth century.

A North Texas teacher, accused of impregnating his 15-year-old student, surrendered to authorities Friday. This marks another improper teacher-student relationship that resulted in pregnancy recently amid the state’s skyrocketing number of sexual misconduct cases filed this year.

Israeli Students Win 10 Medals at Physics and Math Olympiads

Israeli competitors earned a combined ten medals at the International Physics Olympiad which took place in Zurich, Switzerland, and the International Mathematical Olympiad which took place in Hong Kong, China. The Israeli teams, comprised of high school students, were ranked 19th and 22nd, respectively.

Republican Platform: The Constitution Gives Federal Government ‘No Role in Education’

The Republican platform affirms the primary role of parents as educators in a child’s life, and supports a constitutional amendment to protect the right of parents to direct their children’s education from the overreach of federal and state governments and from potential international intruders such as the United Nations. It also upholds “parent-driven accountability at every stage of schooling,” and recognizes the value of local control of education.

Texas Lawmaker Calls For Investigation of Islamist-Linked Charter School

An East Texas representative urged the state Attorney General’s office to open an investigation into the Houston-based Harmony Public Schools, purportedly linked to the controversial Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. The charter chain stands accused of fraud, misappropriation of taxpayer dollars, shady business dealings, discrimination, conflicts-of-interest, and other questionable business practices.
