Grassroots Activists Call for Greater Action on Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

The conservative organization Grassroots America sent an open letter to top Texas officials on July 3 voicing its opposition to the recent Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage and calling on state leaders for “resolve, clarity, and decisive actions.”

After the Supreme Court decided same-sex marriage to be a constitutional right, high volumes of political fundraising on the issue have been met with no protection of the state constitution and religious liberty, according to Grassroots America.

The organization stated it’s more than irritated, and continued on in the letter to express further concerns they have:

In light of recent opinions released by the United States Supreme Court, we are deeply concerned that the federal government has over-reached its Constitutional limitations to the extent that the Sovereign State of Texas is in danger of losing its State Constitutional guarantee of a Republican form of government.

We are deeply concerned that you – our state leaders – under pressure by vocal business interest and loud extremists from the left, will simply stand by while our state sovereignty is destroyed and our state constitution nullified by a voracious federal government, assisted by federal judicial activism.

We are deeply concerned by the unprecedented level of apathy and lack of courage demonstrated by a majority of our Congressional delegation and by Congressional leadership as a whole. Their lack of backbone when it comes to wielding constitutional powers to rein in a lawless President and an activist court is sending the United States into clearly uncharted and dangerous territory. We no longer stand on the brink of a constitutional crisis; we are in the middle of it.

Questioning Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and House Speaker Joe Straus on when it will be time for Texas to resist, Grassroots America called the Supreme Court’s decision a “precedence of federal judicial activism and tyranny,” federal commandeering of state assets, and the beginnings of the demise of religious liberty.

The letter closed by stating Texas must be the leader on such a crucial matter, and that Grassroots America “will not cease to raise our voices against inaction.”
