CIUDAD VICTORIA, Tamaulipas – Four gunmen linked to an attack on the main state government building in Tamaulipas and six other murders died in a shootout with authorities Tuesday. The incident is the latest escalation of violence tied to Los Zetas as the cartel continues a terror-based campaign for control of territories abutting Texas.

The shooting took place early Tuesday along a highway that leads to rural Soto La Marina, when state police caught up with four gunmen in a vehicle previously used in an attack on the Bicentennial Tower, the Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office revealed. This week, a group of CDN-Los Zetas gunmen fired numerous shots at the state government campus in an apparent act of reprisal after a crackdown on their operations in Nuevo Laredo. The official targeting led to numerous shootouts, which managed to kill at least a dozen gunmen in recent days.

As part of their investigation, authorities used surveillance cameras to capture images of two gunmen and a getaway vehicle. As state police tried to apprehend the gunmen on Tuesday, they sped off and began a rolling shootout. The mobile skirmish ended with all four gunmen killed. Police found two AR-15s, an AK-47, and a .40 caliber pistol.

Forensic investigators used casings collected at the government campus and matched the striations to those made by the two AR-15s, linking the guns and the gunmen to that shooting. Investigators also matched the AK-47 and the .40 caliber to six other recent murders the CDN-Los Zetas performed in Ciudad Victoria.

The CDN-Los Zetas are fighting for control of Ciudad Victoria against their rivals from the “Old School” faction of Los Zetas and their allies, the Gulf Cartel. The turf war is increasing the number of cartel executions in the city.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “Francisco Morales” from Tamaulipas.
