Thursday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” when asked about President Donald Trump’s tweets about MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama David Axelrod said there was “a difference between being a fighter and epic jerk.”

Axelrod said, “In the very short-term, we’re sitting here talking about this instead of the very important issues facing the country. We’re not talking about health care; we are not talking about national security because this demands discussion through the sheer outrageousness of the quote. You know, here’s the thing, Donald Trump did all of these kinds of things before he got elected president. He’s been behaving badly all his life. He’s flouted norms, flouted rules, he’s pushed laws, and he’s president of the United States. And in his mind, that’s what got him here.”

He continued, “You hear his enablers today saying ‘Well he’s a fighter,’ You know, there is a difference between being a fighter and epic jerk, and one shouldn’t mistake the two. Fighting means to fight for what you believe in. Fighting means not putting yourself and your ego in the middle of every single interaction you have.”

Axelrod added, “If the president spent even a quarter of the time that he spends watching television and tweeting on trying to master the details of things like health care, he would be better off, and the country would be better off.”
