Katyal: Powell, Chesebro Testimony ‘Is Going to Be Very Significant’ Against Trump

Former Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal said Monday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro will have “very significant” testimony against former President Donald Trump in the Georgia RICO election case after pleading guilty to crimes.

Katyal said, “Fani Willis is showing her conspiracy chops. She is batting 100%, and doing so with two attorneys.”

He continued, “These are MAGA attorneys who said, yes we committed crimes felonies and misdemeanors. It makes it hard for Trump to spin it away. He is trying by saying, ‘Oh Sidney Powell was never my lawyer,’ which is contradicted by his own tweets.”

He added, “I think the testimony is going to be very significant. The reason, the tell for me is Fani Willis agreed to plea deals with no jail time. You only do that if the testimony is really pretty powerful and compelling. Indeed, Sidney Powell and Chesebro both taped their testimony in advance of the plea deal coming out. They’re sworn not to talk about it with anyone, including members of the media, or notably, other defendants like Donald Trump.”

Katyal concluded, “You’re seeing, bigger picture, you’re seeing Trump do what he always does. When he gets in trouble, he tries to have someone else hold the bag, and he abandons them, and that’s what he’s doing with Sidney Powell. That’s why when you were showing the picture of dominos falling, I think that’s exactly right. if you’re one of the 16 defendants, you know you’re at risk of being the next Sidney Powell. There’s only one choice for you, which is to play by the law, go tell your evidence, tell what happened, tell the truth, and, you know, accept the consequences. Trump is not going to protect you. This happens in conspiracy case after conspiracy case once a couple people start to flip, others follow.”
