‘Fifty Shades’ Crosses $500M Mark at Worldwide Box Office

Fifty Shades of Grey has crossed $500 million at the global box office.

The film, based on the racy bestselling novel by E.L. James, now stands at $502 million, $150 million of which came from domestic receipts, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Universal film has broken several impressive records since its U.S. release on February 11; according to Deadline, the film holds the current record for biggest R-rated domestic release of all time (3,646 screens), highest-grossing Valentine’s Day release ($36.8 million), and highest-grossing three-day February opening ever ($85.2 million).

The film has been a monster hit overseas, where it has remained atop the international box office for three consecutive weeks. Deadline reported that on Monday, the film became Universal’s highest-grossing R-rated international release of all time.

The good economic news probably bodes well for the film’s sequels; shortly before the first film’s release, Universal green-lit two sequels based on the remaining two books in the series, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, respectively, according to MTV.

Jamie Dornan, who plays the titular Christian Grey in the film, has reportedly been offered $12 million to reprise his role in the first sequel.
