At least five Muslim men have been sentenced to a combined 82 years for their roles in a child sex grooming ring in the picturesque market town of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire in the South East of England.
The taxi drivers and market traders had been found guilty in July, but have now been sentenced for a range of crimes including rape of a child under 13 and child prostitution.
Although child ‘A’, who had been 12 and 13-years-old when she was abused told police she had been raped by at least 60 men, only 11 of the men have faced charges. The girl and a second, identified only as child ‘B’ had been given gifts by the men, including fast food, drugs, and inexpensive trinkets in return for sex and were passed around.
The plight of the first girl was only flagged by authorities after she had given birth twice in two years and couldn’t identify the fathers, reports The Guardian.
She had been raped so frequently – daily – by different men, she had no way of telling. During his sentencing, senior judge John Bevan QC said the race of the girls played a significant factor in why they had been picked for abuse by the men. He said that the Asian community looked after their own, while the native one failed to do so, remarking:
“The combination of inadequate parenting leading to rebellious children lacking supervision provided an opportunity. If they pursued Asian underage girls, they would have paid a heavy price in their community.”
Vikram Singh, 45, drugged the girls and raped them, and has been identified as a ringleader. He was sentenced to 14 years. Asif Hussain, 33, of Milton Keynes, was convicted of three counts of rape and jailed for 13 years. The court heard how he raped one of the girls in her home while she was still wearing her school uniform and attempted to sell her on to men who resembled “Osama Bin Laden”.
Arshad Jani, 33, was found guilty of rape and conspiracy to rape and jailed for 13 years. The court was told he had a wife and young family in Pakistan who he had been supporting with his earnings in Aylesbury.
Pakistani citizen Mohammed Imran, 38, of Bradford, was convicted of three counts of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape and one count of child prostitution. He will be jailed for 19 years and will face deportation upon his release.
Akbari Khan, 36, of Aylesbury, was found guilty of two counts of rape, administering a substance with intent, and conspiracy to rape and will be jailed for 16 years. Like Jani, he also has a young family. Taimoor Khan, 29, was sentenced to three years in prison for one count of sexual activity with a child.
The testimony of the girls makes shocking reading. Girl ‘A’ said in a police statement: “You get passed round. It wasn’t particularly me looking for them. It was them looking for me. It’s just that they pass your number around. Or you’re with one of them and they invited three or four of their friends round and then you have to sleep with them.
“Because you’re in their place and they’re making your life a bit more exciting, so you do what they want. I just knew Asian men wanted to sleep with me. I didn’t think they found me attractive. I was happy that I was wanted. I felt popular. Like they wanted me and I got a load of attention, that was it.”
Girl B is now suing Buckinghamshire county council for neglect.
