San Francisco Board of Supervisors President London Breed has urged members of the black community to turn their children in to authorities if they know that they are involved with gun-related violence.

“When you know your kids are involved in this violence, let’s turn them in,” the Democrat said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I know it’s not popular to say,” she went on while noting that it is necessary “to save their lives and somebody else’s life… If we are going to change the problems, we have to look inside our own homes and see if we have problems with our own children.”

Breed’s words came just days after four young black men were gunned down in a stolen car in the Hayes Valley neighborhood that Breed represents, the Chronicle notes.

Breed, who is also black, was raised in San Francisco’s public housing, has a brother who was addicted to drugs and who is now incarcerated for robbery and other crimes, and a younger sister who died from a drug overdose more than 10 years ago, according to the Chronicle. She described to the crowd gathered before her how her grandmother had flushed her brother’s drugs down the toilet when she found them and urged those present to police their own children in the same light .

She said that while the need for greater police forces and social service programs are part of the solution to putting an end to the vicious cycle of violence in those locales, “part of that means holding ourselves accountable.”
