Oct. 20 (UPI) — Financial institutions based in the United Kingdom reported widespread disruption of their online services Tuesday after Google outages hit a significant portion of its Cloud services.
“Multiple Google Cloud services are experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in europe-west2 region. Our engineering team continues to investigate,” Google Cloud said in an alert issued at 2:08 a.m. EDT in which it apologized to all those affected and promised to provide an update by 7 a.m. EDT.
The Europe-west-2 region is London, England, according to the Google Cloud website.
Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, HSBC, Natwest, Revolut and delivery providers Royal Mail and DPD were among businesses where users reported issues.
Lloyds Bank, of which Halifax and Bank of Scotland are part of the same group, told the BBC “we understand some are having issues with certain online services this morning.”
“We are aware of similar issues affecting other organizations and are monitoring the situation closely,” the bank said.
Online bank Revolut reported a “service disruption affecting multiple services” after large numbers of customers said they were having problems — but stressed that customer accounts had not been compromised.
“We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe. We’ve been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused,” Revolut said.
The BBC said it was unclear if all the firms were Google Cloud services clients, meaning problems experienced on Tuesday may have had a different origin.
Two outages affecting global internet intermediary Cloudflare in November and December took out some of the world’s most heavily used websites, including AI, search, social media and payment systems for several hours.
