June 29 (UPI) — A woman was killed over the weekend in an alligator attack near a river in Florida, and in a separate attack a child was injured.
A 31-year-old woman was swimming with friends along the Econlockhatchee River at Little Big Econ State Forest when she was attacked on Sunday. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The woman was bitten on both arms. Two alligators were taken from the area of the attack to be tested to see if they were involved in the attack.
“The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time,” the Florida Fish and Wildlife and Conservation Commission said in a statement.
The commission said in a report that it responded to another incident in which a child was bitten on Saturday while fishing on the shore of the Ocklawaha River at Nelson Fish Camp.
An alligator measuring 8-feet, 7-inches was euthanized in relation to the incident.
The weekend attacks follow a crocodile attack last week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A 28-year-old man was killed in the attack while snorkeling.
