Nov. 3 (UPI) — Waymo’s self-driving taxis are heading to San Diego, Detroit and Las Vegas sometime next year, the company announced Monday.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has been testing its autonomous vehicles in the three cities to see how they perform under various conditions, including on snow and ice in Detroit. A launch date has not been announced.

“We’re bringing the safety, reliability and magic of our autonomous ride-hail service to three more cities next year,” the company wrote Monday in a post on X.

Waymo currently operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin and Atlanta, with the company revealing it is working as quickly as possible to bring its driverless technology to more cities, including Boston, Seattle, Denver, Miami, New York City and Washington, D.C.

While Waymo is licensed for commercial autonomous ride hailing in California, it is working to obtain the necessary permits in Nevada and Michigan for the company’s 2026 launch.

“We’ll follow our safety framework and serve riders in these cities when we’ve properly validated our technology and obtained the necessary permissions,” Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp told The Verge, “with the intentions to open our doors to riders next year.”

Last month, Waymo tested its new Jaguar-brand taxis in the Bronx, N,Y. It plans to launch them next year in London, making it the first European city to host autonomous taxi services.
