San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver went on a radio program and said gay football players would not be welcome in NFL locker rooms.
In an interview with shock jock Artie Lange, Culliver said, “I don’t do the gay guys, man.”
“I don’t do that,” Culliver said. “No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah … can’t be … in the locker room man. Nah.”
When asked if gay football players should keep their sexuality to themselves, Culliver said gay football players should “come out 10 years later after” retirement.
Representatives for the former South Carolina Gamecock were startled by his comments and were not aware of them. Culliver’s comments will cause a firestorm because he plays in San Francisco, where a large number of gay people live.
Retired San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Kwame Harris recently was revealed to be gay after a police report revealed that he had attacked his ex-boyfriend. Sports Illustrated ran a photo of two gay men kissing at a San Francisco sports bar for this week’s Super Bowl preview issue.
