Shanghai Medical Chief Replaces Doctors with Communists to Fight Coronavirus

Zhang Wenhong, the leader of Shanghai’s effort to battle the Wuhan coronavirus, made some waves on Wednesday by suggesting Chinese Communist Party officials should be working on the frontlines against the disease, in keeping with their “oath to put the public welfare first.” On Thursday the state-run Global Times reported Zhang has indeed “replaced all frontline doctors with Party members and the decision is non-negotiable.”

China Confirms Wuhan Virus Infections in over 90% of Provinces

Chinese state media confirmed on Friday that the coronavirus that originated in the city of Wuhan has now infected 29 of China’s 31 provinces, a concession likely to be taken by critics as confirmation that the Chinese government has not been honest about how rapidly the disease is spreading. Increasingly draconian measures abruptly taken to combat the virus, such as effectively quarantining Wuhan and several other cities, convey the impression of a crisis that is much more serious than Beijing wanted to admit.
