The body of a kidnapped journalist from the Mexican state of Veracruz has been found after weeks of searching, and the former police officer accused of killing him is claiming that the mayor of an area town ordered the murder.
The beheaded body of Moises Sanchez was found inside a black trash bag in Veracruz just weeks after a group of gunmen kidnapped him, Mexico’s Proceso Magazine reported.
As Breitbart Texas had previously reported, Sanchez had been a reporter of the La Unión newspaper and had been critical of the government. That criticism appears to have been Sanchez’s undoing, according to reports in the Mexican media, because his accused killers are former police officers, who are now pointing fingers at their mayor.
The main suspect, Clemente Noé Rodríguez Martínez, is a former local police officer who reportedly told investigators that he, along with a group of other former cops, kidnapped the reporter and killed him the same day he went missing earlier this month.
Rodriguez Martinez said he got the order to kill Sanchez from Deputy Police Chief Martín López Meneses, who in turn issued the order under the instruction of Omar Cruz Reyes, the mayor of Medellin, Veracruz.
Mexican authorities had begun the legal procedures to strip Cruz of the immunity that his office provided in order to detain him and question him.
If the accusations prove correct, Cruz would be just the latest on a growing list of Mexican politicians tied to murder. The mayor of the town of Iguala in Guerrero remains in custody following the kidnapping and murder of 34 education students. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the current theory is that Iguala’s Mayor Jose Luis Abarca ordered the students kidnapped in order to keep them from ruining a public event hosted by his wife.
