MONTERREY, Nuevo Leon — Authorities found a man buried in a shallow grave in an abandoned lot. The murder victim was under investigation for extorting local businessmen in this border state.

Officials found the body in the rural town of Marin on the northwestern side of the Monterrey metropolitan area. He had been missing for three days.

Investigators with the Nuevo Leon Attorney General’s Office checked a clandestine gravesite near the Marin Zuazua highway where authorities reported the discovery of the body. Officials identified the body as 40-year-old Taurino Alonso Arvizu. While the body showed an advanced state of decomposition, authorities were able to determine that his hands had been bound with wire.

A law enforcement source revealed to Breitbart Texas that Alonso was the target of an investigation into extortion. He was suspected of collecting fees from businessmen in the city of Apodaca. The law enforcement source would not comment if Alonso was working for a particular drug cartel or if he was working in an independent fashion. The state appears to be going through a spike in extortions, the official said.

Near the area where they found the clandestine gravesite, authorities found a second body. This led investigators to believe that the crime could have been a revenge of sorts.

The border state of Nuevo Leon has seen a spike in cartel members extorting funds from local businessmen as well as independent criminals passing themselves off as cartel gunmen to extort victims.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tony Aranda from Nuevo León.
