Why are the Democrats trying to derail Trey Gowdy’s Benghazi investigation? It seems to me if they chose to seriously participate in the Select Committee probe, Democrats would send a clear signal to the American people that they care about our national security. I guess not!
On September 11, 2012, Islamic militants attacked the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi and killed four Americans: U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. In addition to the tragic loss of these four men, ten others were injured in these attacks. The day after these attacks took place, President Obama went to a fundraiser in Las Vegas for his 2012 campaign, and ever since then, Democrats and the mainstream media have done everything in their power to downplay the significance of these events and the importance of investigating them.
President Obama repeatedly refused to call the Benghazi attack what it was – a terrorist attack – despite later claiming that he had. This lie was so obvious that even the Washington Post took notice: “But the president’s claim that he said ‘act of terrorism’ is taking revisionist history too far, given that he repeatedly refused to commit to that phrase when asked directly by reporters in the weeks after the attack. He appears to have gone out of his way to avoid saying it was a terrorist attack, so he has little standing to make that claim now.”
This pattern of behavior that began with President Obama and has spread to the rank-and-file Democrats has blinded them to the facts and caused them to shirk their responsibilities as Members of Congress. It has taken years, after a great deal of stonewalling from the Obama administration and the mainstream media, to get to the point we are at today, when we have a Select Committee tasked with investigating the Benghazi attack and finally finding the truth. My organization and many Members on Capitol Hill have worked tirelessly to push House Leadership to establish the Gowdy Committee and finally give the families of the fallen and the American people the answers they deserve.
The political party that so enjoys spending taxpayer dollars is now wringing their hands over the money spent investigating the terrorist attack in Benghazi and its aftermath. With the public side of the investigation well underway, it’s time for Democrats to stop complaining about the Select Committee and put politics aside for once so that the families of the fallen finally can know the truth about why their loved ones had to lose their lives. My message to House Democrats is to please put down the talking points from the Obama White House and work with the Republican members of the Gowdy Committee. The Stevens, Smith, Woods and Doherty families have waited long enough for answers; it’s time to start asking the tough questions.
