An eighth grade student in California was given detention after he shared some of his chicken burrito with a classmate who didn’t like the cafeteria’s lunch.
Kyle Bradford told Central Pennsylvania’s Fox 43 that he just did what he thought was right.
“It seemed like, he couldn’t get one, a normal lunch,” Bradford said. “So I just wanted to give mine to him because I really wasn’t that hungry. It was just going to go in the garbage if I didn’t eat it.”
Bradford’s school district reportedly has strict rules prohibiting the sharing of food to avoid allergy-related problems.
People weighed in on the issue on Fox 43’s Facebook page, with most saying detention was too harsh of a punishment for Kyle.
“Detention isn’t necessary,” wrote Teresa Carter. “A notice to all parents why students can’t share lunch is sufficient.”
Others criticized the school district’s no-sharing policy.
“I am sorry but as the age of an eighth grader, that child would know if there was an allergy and steer clear of it,” wrote Tonya Kiebler. “It’s not like you’re dealing with pre-schoolers here. This child was trying to be nice. The school didn’t like it and came up with a cockamamie story to cover their butts… nothing more.”
For his part, Kyle reportedly said he would share his lunch with a friend again if asked.
