Mohammed Is Oslo's Most Popular Name
Oslo has become the latest western city to have Mohammed as its most popular name for men and boys, according to the Local. This is the first time in its history that the name of the Muslim prophet has topped the league table.
Recently Breitbart London reported that Mohammed was the most popular boys name in Britain, but this was based on births over the last year. In the case of the Norweigan capital the name is the most popular overall name for men and boys, showing just how large the Muslim population is. It had already been the most popular name for newborn baby boys four years in a row.
Statistics Norway (Statistisk Sentralbyrå - SSB) counted the entire population of Oslo in order to come up with the statistic. Altogether 4,801 boys and men are named Mohammed or variations of Mohammed as their first name, and Mohammed has thereby passed both Jan (4,667) and Per (4,155).
The popularity of the name has come about because Muslims have a higher birthrate than the established local population. This is coupled with an increase in population due to immigration, which continues to rise in most countries in Europe.
Norway is not a member of the European Union but it is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) so anyone with an EU passport can move there. This means once an immigrant is given citizenship anywhere in Europe they can move there, which was not a traditional destination for immigration into Europe.
