Maine Republican National Committeeman Mark Willis has failed to secure the support he needed to have his name placed in nomination for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee (RNC). The election will be held today at the RNC winter meeting in Charlotte, NC. Willis had needed support from two committemen in three states to qualify. The incumbent chair, Reince Priebus, will now be re-elected unopposed.

American politics as practiced in Washington today resembles the dystopian worlds described in such literary works as Animal Farm, 1984, and The Hunger Games more closely than the world in which our Founding Fathers lived when they wrote and ratified the Constitution. These fictional worlds in which "peace" is "war" and phrases like "the buck stops here" mean "I am not to blame" are more real today than history itself. And no Republican legislator in the Capitol yesterday chose to play the role of Patrick Henry, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin . . . or even Katniss Everdeen.

When Ravens safety Bernard Pollard knocked out Patriots running back Stevan Ridley with a brutal head-to-head hit, Ridley fell to the ground, arms flailing in the classic "fencing response" of someone experiencing a brain injury. He fumbled the ball, and it was a turning point in the game. To many fans watching the collision, it also appeared to be a turning point in Ridley's life. To the layman, it is hard to imagine that the hit did not cause permanent damage to Ridley's brain, or at the very least move him closer to the trigger point for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

"Today we praise the American tradition of transforming, or reaffirming, immense power in the inauguration of the President of the United States. We do this in a peaceful, orderly way. There is no mob. No coup. No insurrection. This is a moment when millions stop and watch. A moment most of us always will remember. It is a moment that is our most conspicuous and enduring symbol of the American democracy."

On Thursday night, the executive committee of the Alaska Republican Party met to consider charges of rules violations brought against incoming chairman Russ Millette. While the charges were aired, the meeting left the matter unresolved until February 1, the day Millette is scheduled to take over the reigns of party leadership from incumbent chairman Randy Ruedrich.

Russ Millette was elected chairman of the Alaska Republican Party in April when a group of Ron Paul supporters, tea party backers, and anti-establishment delegates showed up at the state party's convention in large numbers. In Alaska, the Republican Party chairman is elected in an even numbered year and begins his term at the beginning of the next year.

The relationship between the Republican establishment and Ron Paul supporters within the GOP has been at times volatile over the past year, and until now Priebus has not proactively sought out support from the Ron Paul-Libertarian side of the party.
