GA Senate Candidate Nunn to Return Money from Felon Donor

Saying she was unaware of a fundraiser’s criminal history, Georgia Democratic Senate candidate Michelle Nunn now says she will not take the cash raised for her campaign by an operative who was a former Black Panther and was convicted of bribery.

Early in July Nunn, the daughter of longtime Senator Sam Nunn, held a fundraiser on Capitol Hill sponsored by Virtual Murrell who now owns The Pegasus Group, a DC-based government relations outfit.

However, a few decades ago, Murrell was a bit more than just an inside-the-beltway lobbyist. He was an early leader of the Black Panther Party during its most militant phase. If that wasn’t bad enough, in 1995 Mirrell was convicted of bribery and violating the Hobbs Act when he was an aide to an Oakland, California, city councilman. He spent a year in prison for that crime.

Now Nunn is assuring supporters that she didn’t know of her sponsor’s criminal history.

“Nunn spokesman Nathan Click said Friday that Nunn was unaware of Virtual Murrell’s criminal history and would not be depositing funds from him or anything he raised for Tuesday’s event in Washington,” the AP reported.

If Nunn faces Republican David Perdue in the general election, polls show Perdue with a slight lead. But she trails GOP candidate Jack Kingston by six points. The winner of the GOP primary will be determined July 22.
