Police Searching for Suspects After Cop Shot and Killed in Chicago Suburb

Police in the northern Chicago suburb of Fox Lake are on a manhunt for three suspects after an officer was shot and killed during the morning hours of September 1.

According to CBS Chicago, “Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli said, around 7:50 a.m., the officer radioed he was pursuing three suspects, after looking into their ‘suspicious activity.’ Police lost radio contact with the officer, who was later found with a gunshot wound.”

Police indicate that the trio consists of two white males and one black male. CBS Chicago points to “unconfirmed reports” that the trio may have taken the fallen “officer’s gun and pepper spray.”

The manhunt appears to be centered “on a marshy area off Rainier Way and Rollins Road.” Police officers from various departments can be seen walking the area in body armor as helicopters circle above and K-9 units help search the ground.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the first officer who arrived on scene could be heard over the police scanner saying, “Send everybody you possibly can… officer is down.” Schools in the area are on lockdown, and a “Metra Milwaukee District/North Line train” has temporarily been halted due to police activity.

*UPDATE*

The officer killed on Tuesday morning was in a “foot pursuit” after three suspects when his radio went silent. According to the Chicago Tribune, the officer radioed that he was pursuing the suspects and when backup units arrived they “found him shot at Route 12 and Sayton Road” in a “marshy area.”

Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose confirms that the officer’s gun and “other gear” were taken by the suspects.
